Tribute to Late R. Ramakrishna, IAS , Ex- M.P. BJP : A Gentleman in Public Life

Ahmed Sohail Siddiqui – Chief Editor, Journalist , Author & an Activist.

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of R. Ramakrishna, a man whose contribution to public life was marked not merely by administrative excellence but by personal humility, grace, and an unwavering commitment to India.

During my tenure as In-charge of the BJP’s Urdu Media Cell at the party headquarters on Ashok Road in New Delhi in the late 1990s, I had the opportunity to observe Ramakrishna Ji closely. Those were years when the party, under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the intellectual guidance of K. R. Malkani, was attempting to present a broader and more inclusive image to sections of Indian society that had traditionally remained distant from it.

Ramakrishna Ji was among a distinguished group of retired civil servants and intellectuals who regularly contributed their experience and expertise to the party’s policy and organizational work. I often saw him interacting with Malkani Ji and other senior members, quietly sharing insights and helping shape discussions. Unlike many who occupy positions of influence, he carried himself with remarkable simplicity.

What remains most vivid in my memory is not his designation as a former IAS officer, nor his later service in the Rajya Sabha, but his character. He was courteous to everyone, regardless of rank or background. He listened more than he spoke. He treated colleagues and workers with respect. In an environment often defined by political competition, he stood out for his civility and dignity.

I remember seeing him during the post-victory celebrations following the 1999 general election, including gatherings at K. R. Malkani Ji’s residence on Ferozeshah Road, where many of the intellectual and policy contributors associated with the party came together. Even in moments of political triumph, Ramakrishna Ji remained the same humble and approachable person.

For me, he embodied a principle that is increasingly rare in public life: he was an Indian first and an Indian last. Whatever one’s political beliefs, there are individuals whose conduct earns respect across ideological lines. Ramakrishna Ji was one such individual.

I offer my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him. May his contributions to public service and his example of decency continue to inspire future generations.

May his soul rest in peace.
